There is one simple way of remembering this. When the word begins with a vowel sound (a,e,i,o,u) then you should use ‘an’ as it sounds better and feels easier to say. When the word begins with a consonant you should use ‘a’. If you use words and phrases such as ‘ball’, ‘glass of water’ or ‘cup of coffee’, then it would be “a ball”, “a glass of water” and “a cup of coffee”.
However, guiding your learners to attain this skill will require a lot of patience and determination. Sure it is somehow easier to teach them the letter sounds, reading words, phrases, and sentences. But teaching them to think and decode meaning from the texts can be a challenging one. You must adjust to the learning abilities of your learners in order for you to fully understand his ways supported with good reading materials.

Please bear in mind that these are only supplementary reading materials to help our learners to continue reading even while at home. It is organized under MS Word format for easier downloading and printing.
